ASA Staffing Industry News: Staffing Firms Add 22,700 Jobs

Staffing firms created 22,700 new jobs in November, up 0.8% from October and 8.5% from November 2013, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-to-year staffing job growth has averaged 8.8% over the past 12 months.

Nonseasonally adjusted BLS data, which estimate the actual number of jobs in the economy, indicated that temporary help employment increased 0.9% from October and 8.2% from the same month last year.

“With employment increases across virtually all sectors, there’s some real holiday cheer in the BLS report for people looking for work,” said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association. “And because payroll budgets are being reset for January, December is one of the best times for job seekers to pursue new flexible and permanent employment opportunities.”

Total U.S. nonfarm payroll employment rose by 321,000 jobs in November (seasonally adjusted), BLS reported. Incorporating revisions for September and October, monthly job gains averaged 278,000 over the past three months, up from an average of 224,000 per month since November of last year.

The unemployment rate held at 5.8% in November. Over the year, the unemployment rate is down by 0.8 percentage point.

BLS also released preliminary October employment data for search and placement services. Seasonally adjusted, employment increased 1.8% from September to October, totaling 335,000—the greatest number of search and placement jobs since September 2001 and 12.8% more than October 2013.
